Avignon

Avignon is a beautiful city located in the south of France, full of history. Pope lived there for a while during the 14th century, and the center of town is surrounded by thick walls and gates protecting the city. Most of the walls are still in good shape. It is quite interesting to drive through a small gate to go in to the city center of Avignon and drive on narrow streets between buildings and houses - as if you went back in time with your car.

(Pont Saint-Bénézet)

If you are in Avignon, this is the first place you will visit. It was also the case for me, when I first visited the city with my parents in 2006. This time I did not go inside because I had to pay to enter. It's a Unesco World Heritage site, built between 1177 and 1185. You don't have to be "on" the bridge to appreciate it - in fact, since the beauty is with its arches, it is better to see from the side. Since I was visiting Avignon to celebrate the birthday of my husband's father, we decided to eat sandwich in a park across the river from the bridge. (Since the bridge is half destroyed, the bridge is on one side, rather than two...) The light-ups and beautifully illuminated cruise ships moving slowly along the river were memorable, and almost nostalgic.

It seems most locals enjoy it too, just walking by the river opposite from the Avignon Bridge, enjoying an early evening with friends and families.
